Cheaper Apple Vision Pro leak reveals cost cuts could come from significantly nerfed display

What Happened: According to The Elec, Apple has requested information from Samsung and LG about 2.1-inch OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) displays with 1700 PPI (Pixels Per Inch). This is a significantly lower standard than the Micro‑OLED displays in the current Apple Vision Pro headset supplied by Sony, which are 1.42 inches with a pixel density of 3391 PPI.

The details:

  • OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) is a relatively new display technology that combines Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) with silicon wafers. Ultimately, this can result in fantastic image quality, such as an ultra-high contrast ratio of 100,000:1, as well as a higher refresh rate than the current Apple Vision Pro’s 100Hz.

  • The leak of a cheaper Apple Vision Pro is not new, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting in his ‘Power On’ newsletter recently that he expects this headset to sell between $1,500 to $2,000 However, we’re not expecting this lower-cost version to launch until at least 2025.

Why does it matter?: With all of this hype about the cost being cheaper, some of the key features may be missing to make it a memorable experience.

Walmart showed off its use of augmented reality and artificial intelligence in its retail operations

“Walmart has been thinking about AR for a long time, but we are starting to double down on the work we are doing about 2.5 years ago,” Vice President Gosby said.

What happened?: Walmart and Unity have partnered to integrated immersive commerce into games and apps. With it, players can buy Walmart physical goods from directly within games.

The Details:

  • It’s a collaboration that enables the world’s biggest retailer to make headway in digital commerce in collaboration with game engine maker Unity, which has more than 1.1 million developers using its Unity editor each month.

  • Developers can explore Walmart’s Unity SDK, facilitating the integration of immersive commerce within their projects, at CES 2024, the big tech trade show in Las Vegas next week.

Why does it matter? Rather than build a metaverse mall that could be a ghost town, this deal lets the commerce take place where the people already are — inside games.

Apple Working on Improved Head-Control Features for Vision Pro, New Patent Suggests

What happened? Apple seems to be exploring new ways to enable control of the Vision Pro headset using your head, according to a recent patent. Right now, there’s already a feature that lets you move a pointer with your head, but Apple is looking at more useful ways to utilize this.

The details:

  • The patent suggests a slider on the screen that users can move by tilting or turning their heads on Apple Vision Pro.

  • It seems like this would help control the volume or adjust brightness using the head. (Just a wild guess)

  • That said, there’s no clear timeline yet for when Apple might release this feature, but now that the patent is out, we might hear more about it in the coming weeks or months.

Why does this matter?

Thinking outside the box, now people with disabilities will be able to use this device making a wider range of people are now able to benefit from this device.
